he Salzburg Easter Festival is delighted to announce that it has signed a contract with the Teatro Real, Madrid, and its artistic director Dr. Gerard Mortier under the terms of which the two organizations will cooperate on a series of opera productions over the coming years. Starting with this year’s new production of Salome, which opened in Salzburg on 16 April 2011, a total of three new productions will be shared between the Salzburg Easter Festival and the Teatro Real, Madrid.

Apart from Salome, the other new productions are Carmen and Parsifal, which will be initially staged at the 2012 and 2013 Easter Festivals respectively. All three productions will be seen at the Salzburg Easter Festival before being staged at the Teatro Real, Madrid, starting in 2013. In each case the Berliner Philharmoniker will perform under the musical direction of Sir Simon Rattle.

In the case of the new productions of Salome and Carmen, agreements have also been reached with two other organizations. Carmen, which will be directed by the British choreographer and director Aletta Collins, will be taken over by the 2012 Salzburg Festival (with the Vienna Philharmonic) under the musical direction of Sir Simon Rattle, while Stefan Herheim’s production of Salome will be presented by Den Norske Opera & Ballett in Oslo in 2013 with their orchestra.
